The Internationalization of Dance in Taiwan's Higher Education: Legitimation Strategies
摘要:
Over the past twenty years, the internationalization of higher education in Taiwan has accelerated for a variety of reasons, be it from government or demographic pressure to growth in emerging discursive resources. The study described in this article focuses specifically on dance in Taiwan’s higher education. Using van Leeuwen’s legitimation theory (2007) as its methodological framework, the article probed both spoken and written texts for articulations of the value of internationalization by significant actors in Taiwan’s dance in higher education field. Through the examination of government speeches and communiqués to interviews with prominent scholars in the field, the study found that, while discourses of resistance to internationalization do exist, namely in the importation of ‘best practices’ in quality assurance and mismatched feelings regarding the cultural and creative industries, the value assumptions of the internationalization of dance in Taiwan’s higher education are largely positive. The findings implicate the continued growth of internationalization in Taiwan’s dance in higher education field.
